The health insurance industry is largely to blame for the rapid escalation of premiums that we have experienced over the last few years. When managed care was first introduced; the industry conditioned the consumer to expect first dollar coverage with the advent of LOW doctor office and prescription drug co-payments. Unfortunately, any cost savings that were achieved with managed care were wiped out by the over utilization of benefits. The spiraling cost of health insurance has forced us to rethink how insurance should be bought. When insurance premiums were inexpensive, there was very little difference between a low deductible and a high deductible. That is no longer the case. Look at this actual case as an example: The premium for a 42 year old female on a $500 deductible plan is $397 a month, while the premium for a $1500 deductible is only $190. Why would you send the insurance company $2484 more a year to lower your deductible $1000? DO THE MATH! It simply doesn't make sense. At Reliable, it is our experience that the majority of our clients do not use ANY portion of their deductible because their policies have doctor office and prescription drug co-pays. For that reason, we generally recommend high deductible plans.
